Faith, Music, y un poquito de sazón

Gene Sanchez never just showed up. He brought his whole self with him—his faith, his humor, his music, and everything he did he did with un poquito de sazon.

At the center of Gene's life was his Christian faith. He went through hardships that could easily have broken him, but his faith gave him strength, purpose, and a reason to keep going. He unashamedly shared his testimony, telling others about what God had done in his life. That faith stayed with him through the struggles, the recovery, the setbacks, and the good years, and it helped shape the grace and compassion he showed to others.

If you knew Gene, you knew that music also held a central place in his life. Wherever he was there was always music somewhere nearby. And if there was a dance floor, you could pretty much count on him being out there. Music and dancing were just part of who he was. He was a true Salsero through and through.

You also knew Gene was a talker—and a charmer. He could strike up a conversation with just about anyone, and somehow make it seem like they had known each other for years. And Gene liked to look good. Really good. He could walk into a room and outdress just about everybody in it.

He was incredibly proud of being Puerto Rican and of being born on the island. "Pa'que tu lo sepas!" That pride never left him. If there was a Puerto Rican festival anywhere around, Gene was going to find it. He loved the music, the culture, the people, and of course the food.

If you knew Gene, you knew he loved being in the kitchen. He never used a recipe—he didn't need one. A little of this, a little of that, taste it, adjust it—that was more his style. He always added a twist that no one expected.

Gene was a plumber by trade, but he never really saw himself as just a plumber. He fancied himself a jack of all trades, and more often than not, he could figure out how to fix whatever needed fixing. He was the kind of person people called when they needed help, and he was usually willing to give it.

That was especially true when someone was struggling. Gene's own life had not always been easy. He had a rough childhood, and sobriety and recovery were something he worked at every day. Because of that, he had a special compassion for people dealing with addiction or simply going through a hard time. He understood what it meant to struggle, and he didn't turn his back on people because of it.

His faith was a big part of that. It gave him grace, compassion, and the ability to see something worthwhile in people even when they were having trouble seeing it in themselves.

And if you knew Gene, you knew his door was always open. There was always conversation, probably some music, very likely something cooking—and there was always room for one more person.

A family story

He Took Me In

— As remembered by John and Johnny

Gene had a way of making room for people.

When his younger relative Johnny was just a kid, he followed Gene everywhere. Gene was with a group of young men who traveled to churches around New York, sharing their stories and putting on plays. Johnny tagged along so often that they started calling him the group's mascot. Before long, Gene made sure he had a place to stay, and Johnny lived with him for five or six months, going to every church service right alongside him.

Years later, Gene and his wife Minerva packed up a Volkswagen and drove across the country, stopping at churches along the way until they settled in California. When John arrived in 1970, just 19 years old, Gene did the same thing again. He took him in. He even taught him how to drive, and John got his license because of Gene.

One by one, the rest of the family followed him west.
